Midjourney Video Tutorial: Image-to-Video Guide, Prompts, Motion and Limits

Midjourney Video turns a still image into a short animated clip. It is an image-to-video workflow: start with a Midjourney image or upload your own starting frame, choose an animation mode, and generate several motion variations. This guide explains the complete workflow, the controls that matter, and the limitations to expect.

What Midjourney Video Can Do

Midjourney Video extends the platform's image workflow into motion. It does not begin with a blank text-to-video canvas: the first frame provides the subject, composition, color, and style that the model tries to preserve while adding movement.

  • Generate an image in Midjourney, then animate it from the image actions.
  • Upload an external image and use it as the starting frame.
  • Generate four clips per job, with each initial clip lasting about five seconds.
  • Extend a clip repeatedly, up to roughly 21 seconds in total.

How to Create a Midjourney Video

  1. Create a still image in Midjourney or upload an external image.
  2. Open the image actions and choose an animation option.
  3. Select Low Motion or High Motion, then choose Auto or Manual prompting.
  4. Review the generated variations and select the clip with the best motion and consistency.
  5. Use Extend when the movement is stable and you need a longer sequence.

Low Motion vs. High Motion

Low Motion is the safer choice for portraits, atmospheric landscapes, product shots, and scenes where the camera should remain stable. High Motionis useful for action, larger subject movement, or obvious camera travel, but it carries a higher risk of warped anatomy and drifting details. Start low, then increase motion only when the scene needs it.

Auto vs. Manual Animation

Auto mode lets Midjourney infer movement from the source image. It is useful for quickly exploring possibilities. Manual mode gives you a motion prompt, making it better when the subject, camera, or sequence must move in a particular way.

How to Write Midjourney Video Prompts

A useful video prompt describes change over time. Avoid repeating every visual detail that already exists in the starting image. Focus on three elements:

  • Action: describe what the subject does—walks, turns, rises, glows, or looks toward the camera.
  • Camera: state a useful camera movement such as a slow push-in, pan, orbit, or locked shot.
  • Progression: explain what changes over time instead of listing static visual adjectives.

Example: A cat darts across the rooftop while the moon rises behind it. The camera pans left and a streetlamp flickers in the foreground.

Static image terms such as “8K,” lens specifications, or marketplace slogans rarely explain motion. Use that prompt space for actions, timing, camera behavior, and scene progression.

Extending a Video

Auto Extend continues the existing prompt and movement. Manual Extend lets you change the next action before generating the continuation. Extend only after choosing a stable initial clip: errors in anatomy, identity, or camera direction often become more noticeable in a longer sequence.

Strengths and Current Limitations

Strengths

  • Strong visual continuity with the source image and Midjourney aesthetic.
  • Fast iteration because a still image can become several motion alternatives.
  • Simple controls for creators who do not need a full timeline editor.

Limitations

  • Complex physical actions, hands, limbs, and object interactions can still break.
  • High Motion can introduce more camera movement and deformation than intended.
  • The tool is designed for short image-to-video clips, not full text-to-video productions.
  • Output resolution and available controls may change as Midjourney updates the model.
